Landmark infrastructure project moves closer to reconnecting communities and supporting healthier outdoor lifestyles

Fraserburgh, Scotland — May 12, 2026 — A major milestone has been reached in the development of the new active travel route between Fraserburgh and Inverallochy, with delivery of the new Fraserburgh–Inverallochy Path Bridge to site in late March 2026.

The project will establish a picturesque active travel path along a former railway line, creating a direct and accessible connection for walkers, runners, cyclists and horse riders travelling between the two communities. The route had previously been interrupted by the Water of Philorth, where the original railway bridge no longer exists.

To address the challenge, the local Community Council partnered with Aberdeenshire Council to deliver a replacement bridge solution. Capital funding for the project was secured through the Scottish Government’s Active Travel Infrastructure Tier 2 Fund.

Engineering consultancy Fairhurst was appointed to design the new bridge, while Edwards Engineering undertook the detailing and fabrication of the structure.

Designed specifically to accommodate site constraints, the bridge was fabricated in two sections to simplify installation. Edwards Engineering conducted detailed site visits to assess factors including challenging terrain, the adjacent busy road and bridge infrastructure, overhead power lines, and nearby gas mains.

The completed bridge structure weighs approximately 12 tonnes, including handrails and specialist decking. Fabricated to Execution Class 3 standards, the bridge has also been protected using thermally sprayed aluminium (TSA) blasting and coating technology to maximise durability and ensure long-term performance.

Once installed, the bridge will complete a vital section of the route and support healthier, more sustainable travel and recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

About the Project

The Fraserburgh–Inverallochy Active Travel Route is designed to encourage walking, cycling, running and horse riding by creating a safe and scenic connection between the neighbouring coastal communities. The project forms part of wider efforts to improve active travel infrastructure across Aberdeenshire and promote healthier, lower-carbon transport options.
